Breast Augmentation

What can this surgery do for me?

Breast augmentation is a fairly simple straight forward operation which can replace lost or missing breast tissue giving a natural and confidence boosting enhancement.

How is the surgery done?

The surgery is performed by inserting a breast prosthesis, a small silicone bag containing either silicone gel or saline. The prosthesis is inserted in one of two positions, either under the breast tissue itself or under the pectoral muscle beneath the breast tissue via a small incision which can be placed in the crease underneath the breast around the lower part of the nipple areola or in the armpit, space is made for the implant, the implant is inserted and the wound is closed with invisible dissolving sutures.

What kind of anaesthetic do I need?

The procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic.

How long am I in hospital?

The operation is usually performed as an overnight stay in hospital in certain cases the procedure can be done as a day case with no overnight stay.

How quickly will I recover from my surgery?

Most patients find that a week off work is adequate for this type of surgery. Occasional twinges and discomfort may be felt following this week but return to work and driving is usually possible at this time. Positioning of the implants under the breast tissue is usually more comfortable than the sub muscular option.

What are the potential problems with this surgery?

Breast augmentation surgery is mainly straightforward there is a small risk of bleeding around the implant after surgery which requires return to theatre to evacuate blood but does not affect the recovery in any other way. There is an approximately 1 in 200 risk of the implants becoming infected after the surgery which may require implant removal with re-implantation possible 3 months after the original surgery. Encapsulation is an unpredictable scar hardening that can occur as the body’s reaction to the implant causing firmness of the implant. This may occur at any time following the surgery.
